Social Action
UU Social Action in Lubbock
Our aim is to work for social change in the direction of social justice. Most of it is done on the individual level. Each member is encouraged to advocate for and aid his/her heartfelt cause. Some of us work with Women's Protective Services, LeLands Heart Sanctuary (an animal rescue operated by one of our members), financially support South Plains Food Banks' Kids' Cafe, Planned Parenthood, Family Promise, and more. We encourage you to do the same.
Two projects are currently the focus of the church as a whole. One is the National Education Taskforce, created in 2008 by our member, Dennis Fehr. We invite you to the web site
http://www.natedtaskforce.org/ . The other project is the West Texas Organizing Strategy (WTOS), which is congregation-based community organizing. Its members are dues-paying congregations or other ongoing institutions, sometimes public schools. "Community organizers do the real work in this country that affects people's lives. For little money and even less credit, they put the needs of their communities before their own, each and every day. They talk to who they know and who they don't, and even more importantly, listen to people's concerns so that they can find ways to make progress, not from the top-down, but from the bottom-up." from Wellstone ActionIn 2009-2010 we will attempt a connection between the two projects by allying with the public school in our church neighborhood, Wheelock Elementary.
The 2009-2010 Wheellock School connection has begun with a collection of school supplies for Wheelock students in the Fall of 2009. Here is a brief report on this project: Wheelock Elementary School Supply Drive Results By Shannon Rinaldo, Coordinator What an honor to be part of such a giving congregation that literally takes care of the neighborhood! As you probably are already aware, the membership/publicity committee joined with the social action committee recently on the Wheelock Elementary School project. The initial idea presented was to have a school supply drive for the kids in need at our neighborhood school. We quickly put out the word and the response was amazing. See the rest of the story in the September 6th, 2009 issue of The Chalice Light.
