Social Action

UU Social Action in Lubbock

Some of us UUs have joined with People of Faith Against the Death Penalty to hold vigil on the days of executions in Texas. The next gathering is Monday, February 20, at 4:30 PM, in solidarity with Occupy Lubbock at 19th and University, SW corner. We will present facts about the injustice of the US criminal justice system.  Come stand with us. The next Texas executions are Feburary 28 and 29. Vigils those days are from 5:30 pm to 6:15 pm at St John's United Methodist Church at 15th and University. Come stand with us.

Our aim is to work for social change in the direction of social justice. Most of it is done on the individual level. Each member is encouraged to advocate for and aid his/her heartfelt cause. Some of us work with and support financially, Women's Protective Services, LeLands Heart Sanctuary (an animal rescue operated by one of our members, Leann Landmesser), South Plains Food Banks' Kids' Cafe, Planned Parenthood, Family Promise, and more. We encourage you to do the same.

As a congregation, we are exploring ways to act together during the 2011-2012 church year. In the meantime we will continue our interest in assisting our neighborhood public school Wheelock Elementary. We train to tutor in reading and math and donate school supplies. We hope to continue and expand that relationship.

We are glad to be connected through the Unitarian Universalist Association to education and action for the Earth, especially concerning the planet’s water (http://uuministryforearth.org/2011-ED-MainPage).

Individually we support the work of the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee (www.uusc.org). One example of the UUSC’s work of particular interest right now is reported in the Spring UUSC letter: “Five years ago UUSC began supporting efforts in Egypt and across the Middle East to promote the teachings of Martin Luther King, Jr. In partnership with the American Islamic Congress, we began exposing a generation of Arabic-and Persian speaking groups to the possibility of nonviolent social change….copies of a comic book about MLK and nonviolence were circulating in Cairo’s Tahrir Square during the recent revolution there.”

As we look for ways to act for social action for justice locally, we draw your attention to what UUs do internationally through the UUA and the UUSC. Faith Without Borders
